Nonviolent Communication

Peace Connections' director Myrna Krehbiel recently returned from a 2-day workshop in Santa Cruz, CA, given by Marshal Rosenberg, Ph.D., author of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life. His presentation on Listening Compassionately and Transforming Anger proved to be outstanding, and Myrna can easily attest to the real, everyday value of this language as seen at the workshop.

Dr. Rosenberg modeled the use of nonviolent communication using a number of persons from the audience with real problems. A woman "Ruth" was struggling with anger towards her elderly mother. Ruth's mother was always asking Ruth why she wasn't there helping her or wanting her to do things for her, but never took the time to ask Ruth how things were going in her life. As Ruth talked about the pain she felt, Dr. Rosenberg listened empathically - not hearing judgement in her words, but validating her feelings. He then helped Ruth see things from her mother's perspective, transforming what was painful in her eyes into recognizing the pain in her mother's life and what her mother's needs were. Once Ruth did that, she realized that she could deal with the situation with compassion.

Rosenberg asserts that the ways we speak often create misunderstanding or frustration, and that our actions are based on needs that we seek to have met. By focusing on shared human needs and values, we form a deeper connections with others and can improve relationships. He "encourages he use of language that increases goodwill - and the avoidance of language that contributes to resentment or lowered self-esteem."

Peace Connections carries a number of materials by Dr. Rosenberg. Just released this month is Speak Peace in a World of Conflict: What You Say Next Will Change Your World. This book shows you how to develop internal peace rooted in the language you use each day, and is filled with inspiring stories, lessons, and ideas drawn from over 40 years of mediating conflicts and healing relationships. $15.95
